Black Box Drama Centre (National Library)

This July, The Fool Theatre continues to celebrate the Singapore Story with KUSU Island – a brand new Chinese musical adaptation of the legends of the off-shore island south of Singapore, riding on the local myths surrounding the island. The story revolves around the theme of motherly love, and questions human’s versus animal’s primal instincts of protecting our surroundings and loved ones and the worthiness of sacrifices that may result from them.

From the positive reviews and reception of Rock Guardians of the Sea, The Fool Theatre is more encouraged to let the rich heritage of Singapore live on in our future generations through retelling local legends which aren’t widely shared amongst the average Singaporean.

TFT continues in our efforts in showing promising, young talents, with more original songs and music to lead our audience into the mythical world of the story.

Join us at the Drama Centre Black Box, from July 2023.

Synopsis

60 years ago, a sea turtle Rose laid 100 eggs on the shore of Temasek. 99 hatchlings have made their way to the sea, except one which remains unmoving. Rose and the unhatched egg became the target of a predatory seagull but were saved by two fishermen in the nick of time. The humans took the unhatched egg and set out to sea. Overwhelmed with motherly love, Rose tails along to rescue her child. A series of disasters followed. Despite being hurt in the process, Rose ultimately chose to sacrifice herself to save the lives of the human perpetrators.

Following the positive reception of “Rock Guardians of the Sea”, The Fool Theatre returns this July with “Kusu Island” — an original Chinese musical adaptation of the legend of the off-shore island south of Singapore. The story centres on the theme of love and sacrifice, and explores the relationship of nature and humans.

Join us as we retell a Singaporean story through a cast of promising, young performers!
